Agriculture is the backbone of the country, employing the majority of the population and producing some of the world's finest coffee, tea, bananas, dairy products, and tropical fruits.

This 10-day agricultural tourism safari takes travelers through different regions of Uganda to experience farming first-hand. Guests will interact with farmers, participate in agricultural activities, learn about traditional and modern farming techniques, and enjoy cultural exchanges with local communities.

Travel will be done in comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs, accompanied by a professional English-speaking guide from Mahogany Travel Expeditions.

Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to Uganda

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Mahogany Travel Expeditions. After a short briefing about the upcoming agricultural tourism journey, transfer to your hotel for relaxation.

Activity Highlight – Introduction to Uganda's Agricultural Diversity: Depending on arrival time, visit a nearby local market where farmers bring fresh produce from surrounding villages. Experience Uganda's rich agricultural diversity including tropical fruits, vegetables, grains, spices, and traditional food ingredients.

Day 2: Entebbe – Jinja (Sugarcane & Fishing Communities)

After an early breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Jinja in Eastern Uganda, a region known for both agriculture and industry.

Activity 1 – Visit to Sugarcane Plantations: Visit extensive sugarcane farms where farmers explain the entire process of sugar production. Learn and participate in:

  • Sugarcane planting and cultivating techniques
  • Harvesting methods used by farmers
  • Sugarcane to sugar processing demonstration
  • Traditional and commercial farming practices
  • Direct interaction with farmers about their livelihoods

Activity 2 – Visit the Source of the Nile and Fishing Communities: Later, visit fishing communities around Lake Victoria. Local fishermen demonstrate traditional fishing techniques, fishing gear such as nets and wooden boats, fish processing and preservation methods. Enjoy tasting freshly prepared fish dishes from the lake.

Day 3: Jinja – Mount Elgon Region (Coffee Experience)

After breakfast, travel to the Mount Elgon region, one of Uganda's most famous coffee-growing areas.

Activity – Coffee Farm Tour: This region produces high-quality Arabica coffee grown on the fertile slopes of Mount Elgon. Participate in an immersive coffee experience including:

  • Walking through coffee plantations with local farmers
  • Learning how coffee plants are grown and maintained
  • Observing the harvesting process of ripe coffee cherries
  • Demonstrations of traditional coffee processing methods (drying and roasting)
  • Traditional coffee tasting with freshly brewed local coffee prepared by farmers

Day 4: Mount Elgon – Organic Farming & Cultural Exchange

Activity 1 – Organic Farming Demonstration: Local farmers demonstrate sustainable farming methods including compost preparation, soil conservation practices, crop rotation techniques, and natural pest control methods that help maintain soil fertility while protecting the environment.

Activity 2 – Banana Farming Experience: Explore banana plantations and learn about different varieties of bananas grown in Uganda, their role in Ugandan food culture, and processing bananas into traditional dishes like matooke.

Activity 3 – Cultural Exchange: Visit a rural homestead to interact with the Bagisu community. Activities include traditional cooking lessons, storytelling and cultural discussions, and learning about daily life in rural farming communities.

Day 5: Mount Elgon – Fort Portal

After breakfast, the journey continues across Uganda toward Fort Portal, a region famous for its fertile farmland and scenic landscapes.

Activity – Roadside Agricultural Stops: During the drive, stop at several farming communities and local markets, observing fruit farms producing pineapples, mangoes, and passion fruits; vegetable gardens supplying regional markets; and farmers selling fresh produce along the roadside. These stops allow you to interact with farmers and learn about small-scale farming businesses.

Day 6: Tea Estates & Dairy Farming

Activity 1 – Visit to Kyaninga Tea Estate: Walk through beautiful tea plantations while learning about the tea production process. Activities include observing and participating in tea harvesting by hand, learning how tea leaves are processed into finished tea products, understanding tea grading and packaging, and enjoying tea tasting sessions.

Activity 2 – Dairy Farming Experience: Visit a dairy farm to learn about cattle management and feeding, milking techniques used by farmers, and processing milk into yogurt, butter, and ghee.

Day 7: Fort Portal – Queen Elizabeth National Park

After a relaxed morning breakfast, embark on a drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Upon arrival, enjoy afternoon relaxation at the lodge with swimming and refreshments. Later, set off for a sunset boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, viewing hippos, elephants, Nile crocodiles, and numerous bird species.

Day 8: Community Agriculture Projects: Beekeeping, Fishing & Farming Communities

Have an early morning breakfast and drive to Kasese for Cocoa Harvest and Coffee factory experience. Learn about beekeeping, an important activity that helps farmers earn additional income. Visitors may observe traditional beehives, honey harvesting methods, and honey processing and packaging.

Activity – Visit Fishing Villages near Kazinga Channel: This area supports both fishing and farming communities. Guests will learn about the relationship between fishing and agriculture, how local communities balance fishing activities with crop farming, and fish preservation and marketing. Visitors may also tour nearby farms producing bananas, vegetables, and fruits used in local markets.

Day 9: Queen Elizabeth – Mbarara (Cattle Corridor)

After breakfast, drive to southwestern Uganda's famous cattle corridor.

Activity – Ankole Cattle Farm Experience: Visit farms raising Ankole long-horned cattle, an iconic breed in western Uganda. Learn about traditional cattle keeping methods, milk production and dairy products, and the cultural importance of cattle in local communities. Participate in a traditional cooking session, preparing meals using locally sourced farm ingredients.

Day 10: Mbarara – Return to Entebbe

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Entebbe.

Activity – Visit the Uganda Equator: Stop at the equator crossing point where you can learn about the geographical significance of the equator, take photos at the iconic landmark, and visit craft shops selling locally made agricultural products and souvenirs. Continue to Entebbe for departure.
